Olympic Drama 2012
As we approach the 2012 London Olympics, schools are keen to make the most of the curriculum opportunities presented by this global event coming to our own backyard.
As a provider of compelling Drama experiences in schools, we would like to add our own offer; a Drama programme which we can guarantee will be a quality learning event, delivered by experienced and creative Drama practitioners.
Who we are
Our small team is led by John Doona, former Advanced Skills Teacher and Adviser to Cheshire County Council and author of two books on primary Drama for Routledge.
What people have said of us
Professor Jonothan Neelands, a leading figure in Drama in Education, has been happy to say, “John Doona is an artist and teacher of exceptional quality... I recommend him to you.”
The Ancient Olympics: A Day of Drama
We will visit your school and offer a full day of Drama workshops exploring the origins of the Olympic movement in the culture of Ancient Greece. Your children will become immersed in bringing to life the people of the ancient world.
The workshop will recreate an Olympic Pentathlon Training Ground in one of Greece’s competitive City States; we will meet athletes, Olympic Champions, trainers, city leaders and the ever-present slaves as they prepare for the opening of the sacred Games at Olympia.
From here, we will look to the story of the Battle of Marathon from which the great race derives its name, as told through the eyes of the renown ancient playwright, Aeschylus, who, when he died, asked for nothing to be placed on his grave-stone but “Fought at Marathon”.
From here, we will move into the realm of Ancient Greek Theatre and consider the most famous of ancient stories, Oepidus.
Practicalities
The cost of a full days work is £395.
A half day is £250.
Two days would be £650
A full week of workshops would be £1200.
We are happy to bring our ready-made workshops to you and deliver them within your school day as stand-alone events as best suits you. For example, we could spend the whole day with one group, have different groups am or pm or offer a selection of sessions to up to four different classes.
Of course, we are also happy to speak to you about any special arrangements you might like to make. For example, in the past we have worked with staff to create more developed whole-week Festival events with the Drama at the heart of the programme and other activity around it - an Olympic Week, perhaps, with a simple presentation to parents on the final day.

“Good people of this great city’s training ground, athletes, trainers and those who have come to support…. You have laboured well this day on this our city’s Pentathlon Training Ground. In two days we shall begin our journey west to the city of Elis and thence to Olympia itself. These are our final days of labour here in the city before the sacred truce is called and we may journey together. Athletes, the day will soon be upon you when you stand before the mighty statue of Zeus and take your oaths; that you have trained for ten months, that you are ready and will compete to the best of your strength and speed and skill. And on that day this….”
“The children absolutely loved it! Feedback was:
Excellent, definitely do it again'
' Very enjoyable, wish we could do it again'
'Nothing was bad about it ... wish we could have practiced the fight scene for longer!'
'Wish we had more time to do it'
@ I wouldn't recommend to other schools because they'll book it up and we won't get to do it as soon!'
Everything about it was superb! It worked well as the children had some prior knowledge about the Greeks, yet they also learned new facts and history. Peter was very knowledgaeble and had a great relationship with the kids immediately ... recommended it to other year groups already!”
